Case Study 1: Integrating an Aquisition

Client
A leading Silicon Valley 150 company providing performance optimization tools for technology management.

Problem
This client had recently acquired a smaller company and had just completed the closing process. The IT group of the acquiring company only then received direction to assume responsibility for the IT services within the acquired organization. The group needed to quickly discover the state of the environment and the resources and people for which it was now responsible and craft an integration strategy to bring the environment in line with their own standards.

Taos Solution

Baseline Skills Assessment

Part of the client's objectives in the acquisition was to assess the incoming team members and understand what skills they were acquiring and how to integrate them into the organization. Taos assessed the team and came up with a breakdown of their skills to set the stage for their integration into the main organization.

Baseline Technology Assessment

The client also needed to get an accurate snapshot of what hardware, software, and Internet services existed in the acquisition's environment. Taos coupled its own hands-on evaluation of the infrastructure (using a combination of discovery tools and interviews) with the existing documentation to create a detailed description of all aspects of the environment.

Baseline Process Assessment

In order to understand how its own procedures and policies related to the acquisition's environment, the client asked Taos to document any existing IT best practices and methodologies and make recommendations where these were missing. Taos reviewed the business needs of the supported organizations and conducted an objective assessment of the IT practices against them.

Gap Analysis

After documenting the complete picture of the existing environment through the complete set of Baseline Assessments, Taos' Professional Services group analyzed the results and defined a series of recommendations to improve the overall efficiency, reliability, and security of the environment as well as a series of open issues regarding the integration with the main environment. From there, Taos suggested a roadmap to integrating the environment with the main organization.

Results
By engaging Taos to complete a Gap Analysis of the full range of Baseline Assessments, the client was able to avoid costly delays in integrating the technologies of both companies. As an added benefit, Taos also helped identify the cultural gaps which, in turn, helped the client more quickly and seamlessly integrate the two teams as well as the two environments.
